Before applying for admission at The Cape Town Baptist Seminary,

Make sure you meet the admission requirements and the required academic points score for your chosen qualification.

Prepare your documents. These documents will be required from students applying to study at Cape Town Baptist Seminary for the first time. You will need to upload them as part of your application, so make sure you have the following before you begin the online process:

Undergraduate Daytime Studies

Daytime Studies: Bachelor of Ministry

Ideal for people preparing for a pastoral, youth, or children’s ministry, or to prepare for missionary service.

Duration: 4 Years

Credits: 480 credits (40 semester subject credits)

Entrance Requirements: Grade 12 (Matric) or its equivalent

Special Notes:

A pass mark of 50% is required and 75% for a distinction.The study of the biblical languages, Greek and Hebrew, are optional.This course may qualify the graduate to pursue post-graduate studies, but the Seminary cannot guarantee that another institution for further studies will accept the student. Also offered as an Evening School option on campus

Bachelor of Theology

Prepares the person for pastoral, youth, or children’s ministry and is excellent training for the missionary-to-be. This course is a must for the person who is considering future studies at a post-graduate level.

Entrance Requirements: Matriculation exemption, age or conditional exemption.

Special Notes:

A pass mark of 50% is required and 75% for a distinction.Greek 2 and Hebrew 1 are required subjects to complete this qualification (alternatively Hebrew 2 and Greek 1).The BTh is a four-year career orientated degree and the equivalent to an honours degree. It therefore qualifies the student for entrance to a master’s degree in theology.

Undergraduate Evening School

The Seminary operates an Evening School where the Bachelor of Ministry degree is Evening School offered. The classes and qualifications are the same in quality, content and level of study as that offered during the daytime and include preparation for the ministry in general, but also cover the studies required to fulfill the requirements for Baptist Union ministry recognition. Since the Bachelor of Theology includes a study of the biblical languages (Greek and Hebrew), the Seminary is only able to offer the Bachelor of Ministry (BMin) at this stage. The four-year BMin degree is offered over a period of five years. Other courses of study may be added in years to come.

Entrance Requirements:

The entrance requirement for the BMin is a matric (Grade 12) with conditional exemption (normally age 23 and older). The Seminary is able to give recognition for prior learning (referred to as RPL), based on a document submitted to the Department of Education. Any prior studies in theology will be evaluated for possible credit towards the BMin. The Seminary cannot give credit for more than 50% towards the completion of the BMin degree.

Lecturers:

The Seminary is using its full-time faculty to teach some of the subjects, while it has access to many qualified and gifted part-time lecturers to teach in the Evening School. The Seminary is committed to maintain a high academic and spiritual standard for all of its programmes in order to prepare men and women for quality ministry.

Fees and Other Costs:

Tuition fees are the same as for the daytime students, based on a fee per subject.

Lecture Times:

Classes are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 6.00pm to 9.30pm on campus. Each evening consists of one-and-a-half hour lecture time for one subject, 30 minutes break and another one-and-a-half hours of lecture time for the second subject.

Student Status

Evening students are regarded and treated as full-time students of the Seminary, with all the rights, privileges and responsibilities of a student. A student card is issued to registered students as proof of their student status. Please consult the “Rules and Regulations” for more details on some of the privileges and responsibilities of students. A copy of the “Rules and Regulations” is given to all students registering for the first time.

Special and External Studies

The Seminary offers subjects to graduates from other institutions to assist them in their preparation for ministerial recognition. If such an applicant has a three year bachelor’s degree with a major in theology, the Seminary could offer him/her the option of completing a BA (Honours)(Theology) with majors in Baptist studies and other ministry-related subjects in order to qualify for Baptist Union ministry recognition. The Seminary has some (limited) subjects available by correspondence, but does not offer the full degrees by correspondence.

The PULSE programmes represent the Cape Town Baptist Seminary’s attempt at taking Theological Education to the local Church.

Pulse Programmes are offered on Campus to individuals who wish to be developed in their comprehension of basic Christian Doctrine and the fundamentals of Christian Ministry. Alternatively this course can be offered from any local Church where a CTBS approved tutor with the minimum of a Bachelor’s degree facilitates the Pulse programme. Pulse has three programme formats.

Pulse 1

This pre-tertiary programme consists of standalone seminars that run over 7weeks. Upon successful completion the student receives a Certificate of Attendance.

Counselling in Children’s Ministry
Introduction to Youth Ministry (BYSA Curriculum)
Church Treasurer’s Short Course
Introduction to Counselling
Deacons’ Short Course

Pulse 2

This pre-tertiary programme consists of 10 modules over a 12 month period after which candidates receive a certificate of completion in the Short Course in Christian Work and an academic transcript. This programme is aimed at laying a foundation for Christians interested in Christian Service within the local Church context.

Pulse 3

This pre-tertiary programme consists of 20 modules over a 24 month period after which candidates receive a certificate of completion in the Short Course in Pastoral Ministry and an academic transcript. This programme is aimed individuals who feel called to Christian Ministry but do not meet the minimum requirements for entrance into Higher Education.

Individuals who do not meet the minimum requirements for entrance into Higher Education or persons who fail to meet the academic demands of Higher Education may be directed to this programme at the discretion of the CTBS Faculty. An individual who completes this programme and wishes to continue to Higher Education programmes may apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
